The “Proper” Hijab

Assalamu Alaikum.

I think that one of the questions that I get asked in all my classes is: “So, what exactly is the proper hijab?”

Well, here’s an article that describes just what the jilbaab (the outer garment worn over the clothes) should be like: “The Requirements of the Jilbab“.

It mentions proofs for each point that it makes, which is excellent.

You might say:”I asked about the hijab, not the jilbab.”

Please read the article for the answer to this question.

Also, here’s a free course on “The Conditions of the Hijab“.

The article on jilbab was a wonderful read. I had been thinking that there was no direct proof for outer garment but just being followed to fulfil the conditions of hijab. But this proves its necessity against the practice of wearing the household clothing outside saying it covers up completely.

    As-Salamu Alaykum,

DjazakAllah for sharing this with us. I think proper hijab is indeed what you described.. it is not just about covering your hair but also covering your body without drawing atttention to yourself and we shouldn’t forget our Inner hijab, your inner modesty.

    Allah Hafiz,

      Jazakillahu kheira for your input.

Yes, the other aspect is very important as well. Lowering our gaze, walking and talking in an appropriate manner, controlling our thoughts, are all part of that.
