HOJ: TEN SIGNS OF SCRUPULOUS PIETY (Al-WARA)

Assalamu Alaikum.

I discussed Al-Wara in class when we discussed extremism. What’s the difference? Well, to make a long story short: Al-Wara is good and is the way of the righteous. Extremism is something bad and is the way of the ignorant.

The sad part is that we have confused the two terms today so when we see al-wara we think that it is extremism (e.g. a woman wearing a niqab) and when we see extremism we think that it is al-wara (e.g. a person deciding that he will become vegetarian because he has doubts about every single company on this planet).

Here’s a nice article on the signs of Al-Wara: Ten signs of Scrupulous Piety¬† (Al-Wara) by Imam As-Samarqandi (rahimahullah).

I don’t think it’s is TRUE to say (as a generalization) that being a vegetarian as a Muslim is an ‘extreme’ thing to do. Another example would have been better..

      Assalamu Alaikum Sister.

      How are you?

Sorry i missed this comment earlier.

Actually, it is an appropriate example – if a person does it believing that it is a better and purer option. However, if a person does it because of health reasons, then that would not be considered extremism.

In my post though, I was alluding to Muslims who doubt whether any meat available is halal, even if it is slaughtered by Muslims. And yes, that would definitely be extreme, and not from the Sunnah.

      Hope that’s clear now.

      Baarakallahu feek.
